HISTORY: Scottish Terrier Press started out as a division of a larger firm, SUMM Associates, that had been primarily involved in the publication of technical material since 1982. Over the years the demand for the same services for literary works has steadily increased. By 2008 this market became so great that Scottish Terrier Press spun off from the parent firm as its own separate entity.
INTERESTS: The press focuses upon solicited, unagented material not likely to be represented by the conventional publishing industry. Scottish Terrier Press distinguishes itself from other presses in its selectivity, close working relationship, perfection of product, endorsement policy and marketing strategies. It selects only material that arouses an exceptional level of passion in both author and staff. Its present client base consists of writers with whose work it is already familiar and of referrals. It has no specialties. Its interests are eclectic although they gravitate toward mainstream fiction. The press has twelve works in progress consisting of two novels (one a trilogy), a memoir, two collections of short stories, a book of folk tales, three collections of poetry and four children’s books. Its production goal is two to four titles a year. It is not a vanity press. Although its products are extremely polished, it has no interest in gift editions. Its small staff, negotiating policies and close management style keep costs down to maximize profit.
OUTPUT: Two to four titles a year.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Our production calendar is booked for the next 24 months. We are not accepting submissions at this time. Most unfortunately, all unsolicited manuscripts are being returned unread.
THE IDEAL CLIENT: A dreamer but also a workaholic…an unknown, unpublished first author who doesn’t have a chance of being represented in the existing publishing climate. The ideal client does not stop after the creative process but instead believes in sweat equity by sharing business and publishing tasks. He is someone who can and will persevere through the numbing details of the production process on a strict budget, and in the end he will still be smiling. He's the kind of person who goes to sleep at night exhausted but happy.
